Manager Bill Florkowski, speaks on ABC 12 about a proposed speed limit on commercial trucks and explains how commercial tires already have a speed limit of their own. Read the transcript of New Push for Big Rig Speed Limits or watch the news video below:
Bill comes in at around the 1 minute mark to remind truckers that "Ninety-five percent of the truck tires have a speed rating of 75 mph. That's the maximum speed of the tire. Anytime you get up there, depending on the weight that you're hauling, anytime you get up to that maximum speed, chances of the tire failing greatly increase."
If you're a trucker, it's important to know the max speed rating of your tires and to pay attention to other factors, including how much weight you're carrying, whether your load is stable or unstable, and the weather. Speed, heat, and weight all play important factors when it comes to your tires.
Did you know an out-of-balance tires will cause a vehicle to vibrate at certain speeds, usually between 50 and 70 miles per hour? A tire is out of balance when one section of the tire is heavier than the others. One ounce of imbalance on a front tire is enough to cause a noticeable vibration in the steering wheel at about 60 miles per hour. Jerry's Tire uses the finest computer wheel balancers to ensure a smooth ride and excellent performance. Our technicians will mount the tire on a balancing machine which spins the wheel to locate the heavier part. They then compensate for the heavy part by attaching a lead weight on the opposite side. Our customers are pleased with how smooth their trucks drive after balancing all four wheels.
Routine wheel alignments are the most effective way to control tire costs and in turn, impact fuel costs as well. We recommend a minimum of two to three alignments per year or every 50,000 to 60,000 miles as part of the average vehicle’s preventive maintenance program.
